Dehumidifiers Recalled for Serious Fire Hazards
If you use a Goldstar or Comfort-Aire dehumidifier, you may want to make sure that it isn’t one of the many recently recalled models, which officials say have been causing house fires.
According to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 98,000 dehumidifiers have been recalled by LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Company. Goldstar model numbers GHD30Y7 and DH305Y7 and Comfort-Aire model number BHD-301-C have been linked to multiple fires across the country.
Many of the homes affected by these defective brands of dehumidifiers have sustained fire damage valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. These items were sold from January 2007 through June 2008 at Home Depot, Walmart, and various other retailers like Ace Hardware and Orgill. It is not clear if there were any injuries or fatalities relating to these defective products.
Why Recall these Humidifiers?
The CPSC and LG Electronics state that the motor in these dehumidifiers can overheat, posing a serious fire hazard. The issue has been linked to several fires across the country, which have caused extensive damage to homes. Although no injuries or fatalities have been reported, it is possible that the incidents of dehumidifiers overheating may have occurred.
Consumers are encouraged to stop using these dehumidifiers immediately and contact LG Electronics to receive a free repair or full refund. The CPSC is also asking consumers to share this dehumidifier recall information with friends and family who may own one of these dehumidifiers.
Defective Dehumidifiers Can Cause Injuries and Damages.
Defective dehumidifiers can cause extensive property damage and potentially serious injury or even death. In addition to the fire danger, these products may also pose an electrocution hazard if not properly installed.
Furthermore, there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if the dehumidifier is used in a poorly ventilated area. It is important to take all necessary precautions when using a defective product and seek medical attention if any symptoms of injury or illness arise.
Product Liability: Recognizing the Risks and Staying Safe
Whenever a product presents a serious risk to consumers, it is the manufacturer’s job to either warn the consumers or issue a safety recall. Dangerous appliances and household items have been known to cause fire hazards, laceration injuries, and electrical shock injuries.
Victims of these types of injuries may pursue financial compensation for their losses by filing a product liability claim against the manufacturer of the defective product.
A product liability claim is a civil lawsuit that a consumer may file to seek compensation from a negligent product manufacturer. Victims can seek compensation for medical bills, property damage from consumer product, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and lost wages.
