Man Killed in Las Vegas Head-On Collision on Rainbow Blvd
A 24-year-old man was fatally injured in a head-on crash, which officials say involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the fatal crash occurred on Rainbow Boulevard near Wigwam Avenue. Police say a Toyota 4Runner crossed the centerline and struck the victim’s 2004 Ford Mustang. A third car also collided with the Toyota. But the driver of that vehicle, a 17-year-old girl, escaped with minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 33-year-old woman, was arrested on a charge of DUI resulting in death.
Under Nevada law, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher. NRS 484.3795 states that “a person driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a controlled substance, to a degree which renders him incapable of safely driving, and [whose] act or neglect of duty proximately causes the death of, or substantial bodily harm to, any person other than himself is guilty of a felony.”
Drunk drivers who cause serious injury or death in a drunk driving accident, in addition to facing serious criminal charges, can also be held civilly liable for the damages they cause. In such cases, the family members of the deceased victim can file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver. Such claims usually seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral costs, and lost future income.
Head-on collisions are one of the most dangerous types of car accidents that can result in severe injuries or even fatalities. These types of accidents occur when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide with each other. Fortunately, there are several steps that drivers can take to avoid head-on collisions and keep themselves and others on the road safe.
Stay Focused and Alert
One of the most important steps drivers can take to avoid head-on collisions is to stay focused and alert while driving. This means avoiding distractions such as using a mobile phone or eating while driving, and keeping your eyes on the road at all times. It is also essential to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, paying attention to road signs and traffic signals.
Stay in Your Lane
Staying in your lane is essential to avoid head-on collisions. Drivers must always stay on the right side of the road and avoid crossing into oncoming traffic. If you need to change lanes, always check your mirrors and blind spots before making the maneuver.
Pass Safely
Passing other vehicles can be a significant cause of head-on collisions. To pass safely, always make sure that there is plenty of space and time to complete the maneuver. Check for oncoming traffic, use your turn signals, and wait for the right moment to pass. Avoid passing on hills, curves, or other areas where visibility is limited.
Follow Traffic Rules
Following traffic rules and regulations can significantly reduce the risk of head-on collisions. Always obey speed limits, stop signs, and other traffic signals. These rules are in place to keep drivers safe and prevent accidents.
Avoid Impairment
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a leading cause of head-on collisions. Impaired drivers can experience reduced reaction times, poor decision-making abilities, and a loss of control over their vehicle. Always avoid driving while impaired and make alternative arrangements if you plan on drinking or using drugs.
Stay Alert at Night
Driving at night can be challenging, particularly when it comes to avoiding head-on collisions. Reduced visibility and impaired drivers can make the roads much more dangerous. To stay safe, make sure that your headlights are working correctly, and use high beams on dark, unlit roads. Also, make sure to take frequent breaks to avoid fatigue, which can affect your alertness.
Be Cautious on Rural Roads
Rural roads can be particularly dangerous when it comes to head-on collisions. These roads are often narrow, winding, and have limited visibility. To stay safe, drivers must pay close attention to the road and avoid speeding. Always stay in your lane and watch for oncoming traffic.
Maintain Your Vehicle
Maintaining your vehicle can significantly reduce the risk of head-on collisions. Make sure that your brakes, tires, and steering are all in good working order. Regularly check your headlights, turn signals, and other safety features to ensure they are functioning correctly.
